Press Update: This Week in Michigan Voter Outreach

For immediate release

Contact: dghanem@communitychange.org

It’s the final week to get out the vote in Michigan before a historic election day. You can find last week’s update here.

Early vote numbers are rolling in and Community Change Action’s program targeting hard-to-reach, low-income, Black, brown, and women voters is outperforming what we’re seeing statewide:

As of Oct 30, 2024, together with our local Michigan partners, we see:

  • 22% of voters statewide have cast an early ballot, but 32% of people targeted by Community Change Action and our partners have voted. Voters we’ve reached are outperforming statewide averages in Michigan by 10%.
  • You can find a deeper dive on our early vote program here.

As of Oct 30, 2024, together with our local Michigan partners we’ve:

  • Knocked 337,376 doors, reaching 509,874 people
  • Made 1,082,392 phone calls
  • Made 122,400 candidate IDs, 74,490 of those positive for Harris

If you’d like to join a canvass, or other voter outreach event, or get in contact with Michigan voters, please reach me at dghanem@communitychange.org

The last week in Michigan…

Michigan Liberation Action Fund and senior organizer at Community Change Action Mike Griffin teamed up with comedian Youtuber Darryl Vega to put out an office-style skit with a GOTV message. The video racked up over 200k views in less than 24 hours on TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube. Check it out here:

Michigan United Action hosted prayer luncheons and breakfasts in support of safe and fair elections and Vice President Harris, as well as a movie night and discussion of the potential impacts of Project 2025.

The final push…

On Sunday, November 3, Community Change Action, Michigan United Action, and Michigan Liberation Action Fund will host ‘Drag out the Vote’ in Detroit, with live performances from local drag queens and information for volunteers in a final push to get out the vote. RSVP with me by email to get connected with folks who can talk about the issues, like reproductive rights, housing, and health care, that are moving voters of color, LGBTQ voters, and young voters.

This weekend, Michigan United Action will launch volunteer canvasses and voter education events at Michigan Tech University

On Election Night, there will be plenty of talking heads at other events, but you can find real grassroots organizers, volunteers, and voters at Michigan Liberation Action Fund’s ‘Dance for Democracy’ election night watch party in Detroit. RSVP with me by email to get connected to folks for real-time reactions.

About Community Change Action Voters

For almost 20 years, Community Change Action and our political committee, Community Change Voters, have redefined electoral organizing by focusing on a north star that usually goes ignored by traditional campaigns: Engaging hard-to-find, hard-to-reach Black, Latino, Native, AAPI, immigrant, women, and young voters to turn out for candidates that align with their values. This work has ramped up to a historical high in the past few months as November fast approaches, focusing on states with key swing districts where voters of color have been consequential to election results. The scale of Community Change Action/Voters’ Harris candidate ID’s is the largest from an independent expenditure program.

For the 2024 cycle, Community Change Action and Community Change Voters are investing the majority of our efforts into Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, co-implementing and co-strategizing with grassroots organizations with established community relationships as we run voter engagement programs with high-impact to our voters. Through this work, we alongside our partners plan to hold more than 2 million conversations with voters in our target states through multiple channels, including volunteer and paid canvass, phone calls, relational voter contact, mail, events, paid digital, and influencers

About our Michigan program

In Michigan, Community Change Action/Voters are focused on electing Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as President and Vice President of the United States, Rep. Elissa Slotkin to the U.S. Senate and defeating Mike Rogers, electing progressive candidates to the third, seventh, eighth, and tenth congressional districts, and securing Michigan’s 15 electoral votes.

To meet our goals of knocking almost 250,000 doors and making 1,175,000 calls to target voters in Michigan, we’re working with grassroots organizations Michigan United Action, a statewide organization of leaders working for economic and racial justice, and Michigan Liberation Action Fund, a statewide network of people and organizations organizing to end the criminalization of Black families and communities of color in Michigan. These organizations do deep voter and community outreach and organizing work in some of the most hotly-contested districts in the state.

You can learn more about our program and our partners’ programs here.
