Rebecca

(WA-05)

Hi, I am Rebecca Kierans and I am a single mother with three children, two of whom still live at home. I struggled with finishing school due to a number of factors, but was able to receive help from Washington State when times were tough for me and my kids. They were able to provide me with Medicaid and EBT.

In 2021, I got my GED and then started going to community college. I now have my AAS in Integrated Community Service and am working towards my bachelor’s degree. Due to being a mom and a student, I am currently unable to work. Without help from federal and state benefits, achieving what I have would not have been possible.

During COVID, one of my children developed mental health issues and was in and out of facilities. My friends in other countries worried that we wouldn’t be able to get the help we needed… but the government and state of Washigton have supported my children and me.

I worry for myself and for the countless other families that are working to improve their lives or simply survive. I am asking my lawmakers and this country’s administration to protect the funding for our basic support services.
